Challenges of distance learning in Latvia

Tālmācības grūtības

Distance learning in Latvia has become very relevant in recent years. Particularly due to the pandemic and technological advances – but it comes with its own set of challenges. One of the biggest difficulties is self-discipline and motivation. When studying remotely, a student must plan their time and complete tasks independently, without a teacher physically present. Many find this hard because at home there are more distractions and it’s easier to procrastinate. A second challenge is the lack of face-to-face interaction. With distance education, you don’t have the same in-person contact with instructors and peers, which can lead to a sense of detachment or isolation. This can make it harder to ask questions or engage in discussions. With written communication (emails, forums), responses aren’t instantaneous and can be harder to interpret.

Technical issues also tend to cause problems. Not all students in Latvia have a stable internet connection or suitable devices. In some regions, internet speed is an issue, which can disrupt live online classes. The sudden shift to distance learning also exposed pedagogical challenges. Not every instructor was prepared to use interactive e-learning solutions. And lectures can become less engaging or not as clear if simply moved to Zoom without adaptation. Students in Latvia also report a feeling of social isolation. Missing out on on-campus student life, face-to-face group work, which can be psychologically difficult. Additionally, taking exams remotely has its own difficulties – there’s the stress about technical glitches (e.g., “what if my internet crashes during the exam?”). And increased anti-cheating measures (webcams, special monitoring software), which can add extra pressure.

Overall, the challenges of distance learning in Latvia mirror those globally. The need for strong IT skills and self-organization. And the necessity for the education system to adapt in providing support to students remotely to mitigate these issues.
