How to present confidently in front of the committee

To present confidently in front of the committee, you need to combine thorough preparation with some public speaking skills.

Key points.

First, know your material. The better you understand your thesis and presentation, the more confident you will feel. If you’ve explained the main ideas to yourself multiple times, you will also find it easier to respond to questions.

Second, practice your delivery. Speak loudly and clearly, and don’t speak too fast. You might try recording yourself on audio or video to ensure your diction is clear and your pace is appropriate. Remember to breathe deeply. If you feel anxious, taking a couple of deep breaths before speaking can calm your heart rate and steadiness of voice.

Third, maintain eye contact with the committee members. This builds trust and shows you are confident in what you’re saying. If direct eye contact is hard, a trick is to look just above or between the members; to them it will still appear as eye contact.

Some secrets.

Engage your audience with a varied tone of voice – emphasize key points with intonation so your speech isn’t monotone. During the Q&A, listen to each question fully without interrupting. And don’t rush your answer – it’s fine to pause briefly to think, then provide a structured answer. Show respect and professionalism: even if a question sounds critical, remain calm, answer politely, and substantiate your viewpoint. Your body language also matters. Stand or sit up straight, don’t cling to the screen or podium, and avoid hands-in-pocket posture. You can use moderate gestures to highlight points, but don’t overdo it. Wild hand movements can be distracting.

A slight smile when appropriate and a friendly, confident demeanor help create a positive connection. Ultimately, confidence during your presentation comes with practice and preparation. The more you have rehearsed (whether alone or in front of friends), the more natural and self-assured you’ll feel in front of the committee.

Believe in yourself.

Remind yourself that you are the expert on your topic. You know your work best, and the committee is there to hear your explanation. That confidence, combined with good speaking technique and engagement, will allow you to present boldly and make a great impression.
