If your internship was mostly formal and you did not get much real work, you can gather information for your practice report from various sources:
- Company materials. Use the organization’s resources (website, annual reports, brochures, internal guidelines). To describe the company, its structure, and its processes. Even if you weren’t actively involved in work tasks, you can include general information about how the company operates.
- Conversations. If possible, talk to your practice supervisor or other employees. Ask about typical tasks and projects in the department. You can incorporate these details into your report as if you had observed them. Also, draw on peers’ experiences. Discuss with classmates whose internships were more hands-on and learn what they did. You can generalize that information in your report.
- Theoretical sources. Rely on your academic knowledge and literature about the industry. For example, if you interned in a finance department but had little to do. You can describe typical financial processes and controls from theory, as if you noticed those practices at the company.
By combining information from these sources, you can fill your practice report with relevant details. Be sure to cite sources if you include external information. For instance, data from the company’s website or a textbook. Even though your personal experience was minimal. Focus on what usually happens in that role or environment and show that you understand it. Connect these theoretical and second-hand insights with the small observations you did make during your practice. This way, you can write a credible practice report that demonstrates understanding of the professional context. Despite the internship being mainly formal.
